Library - Reading Resources
Accelerated Reader (AR) & Renaissance Learning:
Reading is a crucial skill for academic success not only in English classes but also in social studies, science, and even math classes. You can help your student by encouraging the to spend time each day practicing this skill.
At Captain Shreve we will continue to help students improve their reading comprehension and develop their vocabulary through the use of Accelerated Reading. All students, freshmen through seniors, will be given a test in August or early September. They then will begin reading books in their zone and testing on those books by computer in the library. English teachers as well as teachers from different disciplines will be talking to students about their expectations. One of the goals will be for students to achieve an 85% or higher on the reading tests. Scientifically based research has proven that students who read 20 minutes a day show significant gains in comprehension, vocabulary, and in reasoning and problem-solving skills. Look for Accelerated Books at your house and encourage your students to practice daily.

The Rising Star Awards
The CSHS Library sponsors the Rising Star Awards to recognize students who have met challenging personal reading goals. Students are nominated by English teachers each semester. We recognize over 70 students each year.
All rising star award winners are recognized with a certificate and a free book, thanks to community members and DonorsChoose.org. Our Top Reader is awarded a free kindle fire E-reading device!!!
Book Fair
Librarians Maureen Barclay and Dani Long host the annual Book Fair each fall semester. The CSHS Book Fair offers students the opportunity to demonstrate leadership and promote literacy. Students developed presentations on their choice of book, book series, or literacy issue and delivered oral presentations to guest judges.
We recognize students with the Best in Fair Award and the Student Choice Award.
Student representatives also create poster presentations to showcase literacy around the school, including projects for reading in the content area and organizations like The Enterprise school news magazine and Verdant, the school literary and art anthology.
